He thought it would be easy to write the book Spaulding wanted, and expected to dash it off in no time. So I read this with the expectation of reading something related to the main character, but it turned to be something different. And when I finished Shadow and Bone, I thought I needed to read more from the “before” in case there were more world building. I just love to have the complete series of the books in my shelf, that was why I have this one in the first place. I never intended to read this when I have it in my e-reader. ![]() It is sometimes so short that at the time the story starting to work things out BAM! The End. I never felt satisfied reading a short stories or novellas because authors tend to not give a full focus on the development of the world and characters. It would have been amazing to see the rise of a female protagonist, but the transition is very rough. This section stems strictly from the narrative in which the new master of the universe is Teela. ![]() The humor is not dated but reasonably family-friendly and feels nice to know that it’s nothing over the top in that aspect. ![]() Animators put in a lot of effort and dedication, while Kevin Smith’s love for the original series can be seen from the overall animation and editing. Its top-notch with its 80’s aesthetics mixed with the fluid animation tech of 2020 is something I liked, and I am sure every fan of the show would agree with that. The other good thing about the show is the animation. ![]() Let’s talk about the good stuff first as there is not much to speak of yeah, the casting is phenomenal, and so is the voice-acting as Mark Hamill, Lena Headey, and others give impressive performances to a lousy script. ![]() They are taken over almost immediately by Spiro, a giant of a man who thinks he speaks perfect English & who protects the Durrells from being robbed or taken advantage of during their stay on the island. The decision is no sooner made than they set off through Europe, eventually arriving on Corfu with a mountain of luggage & Gerry's dog, Roger. The Durrells - Mother, Larry, Leslie, Margo & 10 year old Gerry - are suffering through a miserable winter when Larry decides that they should move to Corfu to get away from the awful English climate. ![]() So, I've spent the last few weeks listening to the adventures of the Durrell family as I drove to work, cooked & ironed. ![]() When I saw that he had read this one, I knew what I would be listening to next. I loved it but I especially loved Davenport's voice & wondered if he's narrated any audio books. I'd watched the 1970s TV series, South Riding, in which he played Robert Carne. It was actually Nigel Davenport who led me to the book. ![]() It's been on my tbr shelves for a long time & I eventually listened to it as an audio book, so beautifully read by Nigel Davenport. I often say this, but I can't believe it has taken me so long to get around to reading Gerald Durrell's memoir of his childhood in Corfu, My Family and Other Animals. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel is one such book. And while a number of the books are ones I’ve heard of but not yet read, many are books that haven’t previously been on my radar. Were it not for setting myself the challenge to complete the BBC Big Read, I would never have taken the time to read what have since become some of my very favourite books, and in setting myself a new task I hope to unearth many more bookish gems as I tick the remaining 900-odd books from the literary list. And while I’ve been alternating between a title from the list and some of my non-fiction favourites, having a bibliography of books to choose from has reminded me how much I loved (and, at times loathed) reading my way through the BBC Big Read. ![]() Since discovering I’ve read a rather paltry ten percent of the alleged 1001 Books to Read Before You Die, I’ve been on something of a one-woman mission to tick off as many as I can before the decade is out. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Fans certainly wouldn't be mad, especially if it meant a Firefly Lane season 3!) The streaming service also confirmed that season two would be split into two parts à la Stranger Things season 4. After its renewal announcement in May 2021, Netflix confirmed in October 2022 that Firefly Lane season 2 would be the series' last-meaning that a third season of Firefly Lane is definitely not happening. ![]() |
